What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are viruses that affect mammals and birds. In humans, these viruses cause typically mild respiratory infection including the common cold and are easily communicable. Rarer forms of this virus Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and novel coronaviruses are causing a current outbreak that is lethal. There are no antiviral drugs or vaccines approved for the prevention or treatment of this virus yet.
These viruses were first identified in the 1960s, but the source of origin is still unknown. They got their name from their crown-shaped appearance.
The symptoms are similar to any other simple upper respiratory infection including runny nose, common cold, coughing and sneezing, sore throat and sometimes fever. Problem is that you could not distinguish its symptoms from common cold symptoms. It is not possible to identify for a common person, you have to consult a doctor for diagnosis, but most people don’t think there is any reason to consult a doctor for such puny symptoms.
But once coronavirus spreads to the lower respiratory tract (wind-pipe and lungs) it can cause pneumonia.
Things to do for prevention
There is no vaccine for its prevention yet. But there are some steps you could follow to stay prevented from coronavirus.
- Avoid close contact with infected people.
- Stay sanitized every time you return from outside the house.
- Keep your hands away from your nose, eyes, and mouth.
One could treat coronavirus infection similarly as treatment for cold. If you are infected take plenty of rest, avoid going outside and take medicine for sore throat and common cold.
