Navratri 2020 Day 5: Skandamata – 5th Form of Nav Durga, Puja Vidhi, Aarti, Mantra, and Significance

On the fifth day of Navratri 2020, Goddess Skandamata is worshipped. Goddess Durga came to be known as Skandamata (mother of Skanda) when she became the mother of God Kartikeya who is also known as Skanda. Lord Skanda was the elder son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Goddess Skandamata rides on a lion and has four arms. In one or two of her hands, she holds a lotus flower. One of her hands poses a boon-conferring gesture, and from one she holds his son lord Skanda in her lap. She seated on the lotus, that’s why she is also called Padmasana (a lotus-seat). She is also known as Skanda Devi. The lion is her vehicle.

The worshippers must worship Goddess Skandamata with proper Vidhi. They should sit on the holy seat of Kush or sacred blanket. They should start the worshipping same as the other days and then they should pray to the Goddess with Mantra “Sinhasanganata Nitya Padma Ashtakarwar Shubhadastu Sada Devi Scandamata Yashaswini.” Then they should follow Panchapur Vidhi to worship Goddess Skandamata.


Skandamata is believed to be the Goddess of salvation, power, prosperity, and treasure! It is believed that she can bless great wisdom even to the most illiterate person if he happens to worship her. Skandamata possesses the brilliance of the sun. Who he wholeheartedly devoted to her obtains all the achievements and treasures he wants. Her worship purifies the heart of devotees. Her worship is believed to be twice blessed, when devotees worship her, they attain the blessing of Goddess Skandamata and her son Skanda as well.

जय तेरी हो स्कन्द माता। पांचवां नाम तुम्हारा आता॥
सबके मन की जानन हारी। जग जननी सबकी महतारी॥
तेरी जोत जलाता रहूं मैं। हरदम तुझे ध्याता रहूं मै॥
कई नामों से तुझे पुकारा। मुझे एक है तेरा सहारा॥क
ही पहाड़ों पर है डेरा। कई शहरों में तेरा बसेरा॥
हर मन्दिर में तेरे नजारे। गुण गाए तेरे भक्त प्यारे॥
भक्ति अपनी मुझे दिला दो। शक्ति मेरी बिगड़ी बना दो॥
इन्द्र आदि देवता मिल सारे। करे पुकार तुम्हारे द्वारे॥
दुष्ट दैत्य जब चढ़ कर आए। तू ही खण्ड हाथ उठाए॥
दासों को सदा बचाने आयी। भक्त की आस पुजाने आयी॥
