Star batsman Gautam Gambhir criticized MS Dhoni’s approach to bat on no. 7 and led to 16 run defeat to Rajasthan Royals. Gambhir said, ‘Dhoni’s blast in the last over was in no use. In fact, his three consecutive sixes in the last over was his personal run.’ ‘If any captain had done something like him, he would have received a lot more flak.’ he further said.

Gambhir’s comment came after Dhoni surprisingly walked out for bat at no. 7 and CSK failed to chase 217 runs even after a good start. Instead of taking the rein himself, Dhoni sent Sam Curran, debutant Ruturaj Gaikwad, and Kedar Jadhav even after increasing the run rate.
When Dhoni came at no. 7 in the 15th over, CSK needed more than 100 runs, and he started knocking singles in a cool way instead of making an effort to chase the target. Dhoni was 9 off 12 at the end of 18 over. It was his three sixes in the last over that helped him make 29 off 17.
With an exclusive talk with ESPNCricinfo, Gambhir said “there is nothing wrong if you end up getting out early, at least start leading from the front, trying to inspire the team as well. What you did in the last over, probably if you’d done that coming in at No. 4 or 5, alongside Faf, you could have made a game out of it. But probably there was no such intent to make a game out of it.”
