When Vajpayee Got Arrested For Farmers, Spent Five Days in Naini Jail

The great leader sacrifices for the sake of countrymen and this is what had done by one of greatest leaders Atal Bihari Vajpayee. When Congress was in government in UP and the power rested in Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna, Vajpayee raised the voice in the favor of farmers and got arrested. He used to be the leader of the Jana Sangh at that time. Vajpayee had to go to jail on the farmer issue.

He took to the streets to buy wheat.  In the current scenario, Farmers are protesting against the Agrarian Reform Act brought by the Central government. The farmers are protesting to withdraw three agricultural laws and in the protest, the farmers’ organizations have announced a Bharat Bandh. Many opposition parties have come to support the Bharat Bandh.

In such a situation, very few people knew that former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had to go to jail for raising the voice on the issue of farmers. At that time, he was kept in Naini jail. Naini jail was one of the safest jails in the country, where Atal Bihari Vajpayee was detained for five days.

Why Vajpayee Was Arrested.

In 1973, the farmers had a good wheat crop; and the UP government was forcing farmers to sell wheat at government prices. The government’s made it mandatory for all farmers to sell wheat at government prices. But the price was too low and the price of wheat was more in the market due to the good yield of wheat. Farmers were upset due to the government’s new law. That was the reason the Jana Sangh started a wheat levy movement against the government.
